Ushkudar? Safranbolu? The Golden Temple of Amritsar? Somewhere during his travels, Tom discovered contra calling and made it a passion. On Sat, March 6, he lands in exotic Oakland to call Queer Contra for three fabulous-filled hours. Of course, some of the finest contra talent is found within a not-too-distant radius from Humanist Hall. This includes musicians Kathrine Gardner, Charlie Hancock and Craig Johnson -- together known as Fear of Commitment -- who'll fire us up with fiddle, piano and multifarious other instruments. After the dance, stay for Contra Cafe, a friendly, leisurely hour of food and chat at Hum Hall. Invite your friends. Beginners (as always) are welcome -- but come around 7pm while the learning curve is relatively gentle.
