Open Eyes, Queer Night

"Open Eyes, Queer Film Night" takes place the first Friday of each month at the Femina Potens Art Gallery. Open Eyes features local artist's provocative, critical, and engaging films. In addition to the engaging film screenings, Open Eyes also hosts dessert, drinks, discussion and an open mic for directors or artists who can provide a film of five minutes or less. This May showcases two thought-provoking student films that expose, document, and challenge the nuances of gender construction and perception. Allow yourself to revel in the aesthetic ambiguities and conceptual contortions we're taking on in the spirit of social change and queer community. Ann Von Hageman's documentary, Michelle's First Wedding in a Dress, takes a look at one facet of the transsexual experience. Her film follows Michelle Hoffman as she prepares to get married for the second time -this time in a dress. Follow her on her journey to marital bliss by way of dress only at Femina Potens, where the popcorn is as hot as the bride. For filmmaker Joie, art and social consciousness go hand in hand. Joie's film, Gender?, seeks to challenge and debunk the gender binary by interviewing folks from the Mid-West, West Coast, and Canada. The film's rough languid style, which employs non-linear narrative, collage, and animation, echoes the loose and fluid experiences of gender identity. See what transgressive tendencies the film inspires you to let loose as Joie makes space for us all to re-imagine who and what we are.
